Exciting times lie ahead

Words alone can't sum up my thoughts and emotions right now, but Carlinhos Brown can.

war and hunger

"The daily apocalypse of the excluded is what we see when we travel deep in the heart of Africa, China, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Latin America. But what most people don't see is that they key cause of hunger is war. Superposing hunger during the 1990s-because of drought or floods-with the geography of war, the result is that hunger is less due to climate than to politics. Examples abound - in Somalia, Angola, Mozambique, plus the undisguised ethnic cleansing in Liberia, Ethiopia and in Darfur, not to mention the 4 million Afghan refugees to Pakistan and Iran who fled the Taliban during the 1990s. That is hunger as a political weapon.

The privatization of war and its asymmetrical trans-State mutations will only increase the influence of hunger as a political weapon." Pepe Escobar

The privatization of war means that it is profitable to go to war, a liquid war that destroys singular cultures and most anything that resists globalization, as new orders emerge and older ones dissolve. This is a war between the elite minority and the excluded majority, an undeclared global war, or as the anti-neoliberals might call it - the fourth world war.

There is an urgent need for social, equitable and ecological NGOs pioneered by a globally connected civil society. It is our greatest hope.

To be, we have to think

It's the guard and you the living who are in prison, the ultimate prison from which you cannot escape because you do not know that you are incarcerated. Your happiness is the happiness of ignorance and your ignorance is it that keeps you in the prison, which is your life.

Preemptive chemical spraying

"While Santa Cruz County is the epicenter of the moth invasion, state regulators decided to attack the perimeters first, having already executed one aerial spraying program in Monterey.

The second spraying was temporarily blocked by a Monterey County judge after one group claimed the first spraying caused people to become ill. That group, Helping Our Peninsula's Environment (HOPE), has also challenged the state's decision to go forward without a full environmental impact report (EIR). However, the judge recanted after reviewing information produced by the manufacturer of the pheromone." - MC Post

Having low-flying airplanes carpet spraying seemingly benign chemical pheromones all night for 8 hours straight can definitely spoil any Diwali dinner party, as it did ours last night. And it will continue for two weeks, every few months through the life cycle of this Australian moth that hasn't done much more than mate profusely. Who is to say that thirty years down the road we won't discover that this chemical is in fact malignant in some way? Or that we will suddenly become attracted to moths?
